Triphala – The elixir for healthy life

Triphala is an ancient traditional Indian medical system’s prescription to humans which is an herbal concoction of three medicinal plants native to India. It has been in clinical use for many years both internally and externally. It has become increasingly popular among public because of its medical benefits.

Triphala: Chemical constituents

Triphala has been reported to be a rich source of Vitamin C, Ellagic acid, Gallic acid, Chebulinic acid, Bellericanin, β- sitosterol and Flavonoids. Gallic acid and quercetin are more prominent phenolic compounds and are well known antioxidants.

Triphala: Traditional uses

Combination of these three herbals working together is said to be more effective than if taken separately. Traditionally, Triphala has been useful in Gastro-intestinal problems like digestion issues and primarily in constipation. It has also therapeutically effective in various health issues. Topical application also indicated.


Triphala: Antioxidative effects

Triphala has a property to scavenge free radicals in both in-vitro and in-vivo models. An enrichment of polyphenolic compounds such as phenolic acids, flavonoids and tannins is considered to be one of the most important oxidant defensive mechanism.

Triphala: Anti- inflammation

Many studies have revealed the marked benefits of Triphala in inflammatory conditions particularly in Arthritis models. Chebulinic acid, gallic acid and the whole extract showed inhibitory characteristics on inflammation markers.

Triphala: Diabetes control

Administration of Triphala have positive effect on long-term blood glucose control. It is very effective in Glucose intolerance stage.

Triphala: Digestive issues

One of the oldest uses for Triphala is to treat constipation. It is an effective natural alternative to Over-the-counter laxatives and best colon cleanser.

Triphala: Topical application

Water decoction of Triphala is indicated for wound cleansing and vaginal wash in conditions of leucorrhoea.

Medicated oil prepared from Triphala is useful in melasma and hyperpigmentation.


Despite the Triphala is herbal preparation and various health benefits, we consume Triphala with the consultation of a registered medical practitioner and we must be careful in pregnant women and children while using it.
