The season of sun—great for outdoor fun, but not always so awesome for your hair. There’s a lot to love about summer, but humidity and the resulting frizzy, dried out, sun ravaged hair is not among those reasons. Add the damage of wind, water and chlorine and our hair is in crisis mode all summer long.
Luckily, there are easy and natural ways to tame your tresses. Here are some of the most common hair problems you’re likely to encounter this season, and how to fix them.
Summer heat, wind and humidity inevitably causes frizz.
Reduce frizz by drying your hair with a cotton t-shirt instead of a towel. A towel’s texture can cause a ton of friction which disrupts the cuticle and creates frizz, while the flat surface of cotton t-shirts absorb water without causing friction.
Make sure to squeeze your hair, not to rub it, while drying, then blow dry on a medium to cool setting to close the cuticles and avoid frizzing.
Prolonged exposure to the sun can also often result in sunburned scalp.
An easy remedy for tender or dry scalps (or even limp hair) from product build up is to use cucumbers. Slice a cucumber in quarters and rub vigorously on your scalp.
You can use the cucumber on your hair as well, but do go deep into the scalp. This will effectively soothe and moisturize the dry scalp and eliminate product build up.
Sweaty & Greasy Hair
We all tend to sweat under scorching sunlight which further causes our hair to become greasy and damp. It looks unappealing and makes our hair look dull. But you don't want to necessarily get stuck in a pattern of having to shampoo every single day, since that can dry your hair out.
The way you shampoo matters, too. It's also not a good idea to overly scrub your scalp because this increases sebum production. Initially your hair will feel clean, but the oils will come back super-quick, adding that you should be very gentle when massaging shampoo into your scalp.
If you notice greasy roots, reach for dry shampoo. "It's a good option to absorb oil. Some dry shampoos can be harsh and sticky, choosing one that has a lighter formula is recommended.
Why Should You Protect Your Hair from the Sun?
Your hair can get damaged in many different ways during summer time: Overexposure to harmful sun rays, sweat, sea salt, and chlorinated pool water.
Here’s why:
- You may have healthy hair almost all year round, but in the summertime, your hair may turn limp and lifeless. This tends to happen because the sun dries out your hair straws and the increased humidity makes your hair fall flat
- Sweat and dust increase hair problems like dandruff and split ends. The worst case scenario is hair loss and thinning of hair.
- Summers can be harsh on your scalp too – causing dryness and sunburns. Some people believe that hair protects the scalp, but that’s actually not the case. In the end, dry scalp can damage your hair roots.
Dedicate time from your busy schedule to nourish your hair externally as well using natural and chemical free ingredients. There’s nothing like making the most of what nature has to offer.
